Yoga and Mental Health - Pine Rivers Yoga - Brisbane, Australia

Yoga and Mental Health

Sun 29 November (9am-4pm with one hour for BYO lunch)

*** Limited Spaces ***

Join Pine Rivers Yoga level 2 teacher trainees in a one day course to explore your own knowledge and yoga practices so that you can teach Yoga with a deeper understanding of the Pancamayam model.

This course will enable you to better support your own and your students' mental health by engaging with practices relating to Patanjali’s Eight Limbs. Students will explore with curiosity, non-judgement, and loving-kindness, enabling mental health to be understood from holistic, scientific, and lived experiences. It will cover the scope of practice to provide safe, responsible, and informed Yoga spaces that can complement other existing supports.

This course is open to existing Yoga Teachers, and related health professionals wishing to expand their knowledge of this growing area of practice.

This course is crafted to educate and support Yoga teachers to provide presence, environments and class content that enhance their students’ self-awareness, capacity for self-regulation and self-empowerment through Yoga.

It is not a certification in teaching Yoga for specific diagnoses, nor accreditation in mental health first aid. The course will encourage reflection and discussion around scope of practice, boundaries, and referral, as well as highlighting important contraindications and guidelines for working with various manifestations of mental health conditions.

The course will examine aspects of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, along with evidence-based practices of how Yoga supports mental health. Students will explore approaches to working with the body’s interconnecting systems, along with questions of coping, recovery, and social connection.

Course content and learning experiences may help students recognize hidden biases in relation to mental health to better honour the individual students they work with. Hearing testimonials from individuals dealing with mental health conditions is vital to understanding and to planning effective class structure with compassion.

By examining autobiographical narratives, students may understand how mental health/illness is one influence - sometimes major, sometimes minor, but always changing - in shaping the direction and quality of people's lives. This kind of awareness is essential in advancing the dignity and opportunities of people dealing with mental health concerns.

This workshop allows Yoga Australia members to accrue CPD points per day.
